You might need to back up your Gmail while switching your Jobs, Decided to stop using a specific email account or Just wanted to copy all your email from one account to another account. Whatever the reason, It is not a bad idea to backup of your Gmail and Export data or other Google accounts using Google Takeout feature. You can even set your accounts to take a back up at regular intervals which is good practise in general. 

Note : If you are taking backup of your gmail from Company account then you may find that your company has disabled Takeout Feature. In that case you can take help of other third party apps to take a back up of your Gmail but you should check your company’s policies before you try to do it. 

Steps to Backup of Your Gmail :

  • Go to
  • Privacy & personalization→ Click on Manage your data & personalization.”
  • You can “Scroll down\” and see the section of “Download, delete, or make a plan for your data.”
  • Click on “Download your data.”

It will take you to Google Takeout Page. Select the box which is next to Gmail and You can even select other apps of Google like Chrome, Play Store, Map, Google Fit etc to take a back up. (Some services have “Multiple Formats” button and by clicking on it, You may ask to choose Format by which you want to take a backup of your Data) and Click to “Next Step”.

You can decide how you want to receive your data, Click on “Delivery Method” to see options like Download link via Email, Add Data to Google Drive, DropBox, One drive etc.

You can select some option to export data just one time or every two months for 1 year and you can choose File Type & Size. 

  • You can choose .zip or .tgz file 
  • If size is larger than your maximum then it will be split into multiple files. 

Now click on “Create Export”

Now your data export will start. It will take time to finish so wait for it and other options are available to “Cancel Export” Or “Create Another Export”
